Since 2004, the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), has been dedicated to the research and development of biomass circulating fluidized bed gasification technology. It has successfully developed an efficient gasification solution that adapts to a wide range of agricultural and forestry waste. After over a decade of technological breakthroughs, the institute has established China’s leading biomass gasification pilot platform, having accumulated more than 1,000 hours of operation. The platform has conducted numerous tests with various biomass feedstocks, overcoming key challenges for large-scale biomass conversion, such as raw material fluctuations, tar control, and operational stability. This has enabled the efficient generation of ultra-low tar product gas under mild gasification conditions, laying a solid foundation for large-scale applications.

As the industrialization leader of this technology, ZHGAS has been driving its engineering applications forward. Currently, two projects in the field of biomass gasification for green methanol are underway, and another project is under construction for the production of green gas and reducing agents. The technology offers several key advantages, including broad raw material adaptability, high system energy efficiency, and excellent environmental performance. It can convert low-value, disordered biomass waste into high-value, ordered syngas, and when combined with established chemical processes, it can produce high-value fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and oil. This “non-electric utilization” technology also serves as an alternative fuel, enabling industries like steel to achieve a “waste-to-waste, low-carbon, green transformation,” maximizing the green “carbon source” potential of biomass.

Biomass gasification is a crucial pathway for energy transition, and ZHGAS is leveraging technological innovation as a driving force to advance the deep transformation of the green chemical industry chain. Looking ahead, ZHGAS plans to expand the industrial-scale application of biomass circulating fluidized bed gasification technology. The company is strengthening collaborations with domestic and international partners to explore new pathways for biomass energy utilization and contribute to the creation of a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system.
