On October 19, the environmental protection and energy-saving retrofit project for the fixed-bed clean coal gasification system at Jiangsu Heyou Chemical Co., Ltd., constructed by CAS Hefei Coal Gasification Technology Co., Ltd. (“ZHGAS”), was officially put into operation.
Jiangsu Heyou Chemical, located in the Suqian Economic Development Zone of Jiangsu Province, produces 150,000 tons of synthetic ammonia annually. Previously, its gasification section relied on multiple intermittent fixed-bed gasifiers with direct water-washing to cool the gas, resulting in severe wastewater pollution and significant coal sludge disposal challenges. The retrofit replaced this outdated process with dry dust removal, indirect cooling and heat recovery technologies, effectively eliminating pollution issues such as tar and phenol wastewater from the conventional gas cooling system. This upgrade improved environmental protection while recovering sensible heat from the gas, reducing coal consumption and supporting national carbon reduction policies.
Since starting construction in July, the project faced several challenges: the COVID-19 outbreak in Jiangsu, particularly affecting the subcontractor teams from the heavily impacted Yangzhou area, as well as confirmed cases at the site, caused difficulties in labor and material deployment. Continuous rainfall further limited effective work hours. Despite these pressures, the project team worked closely with the owner to coordinate plans and clarify goals, held daily coordination meetings with subcontractors to promptly resolve issues, and ensured efficient progress.
The project is now operating stably. Dust in the raw coal gas is directly removed via dry dust collectors, with post-treatment gas temperature and dust content both exceeding design expectations. The plant has achieved “zero discharge” of high-concentration wastewater, waste gas, and solid waste, significantly improving the overall environment and meeting stringent emission standards.
As a platform for the industrialization of scientific research, ZHGAS remains committed to innovation aligned with industry needs. By addressing practical production challenges through technological innovation and application, the indirect cooling retrofit has extended the service life of existing equipment, revitalized fixed-bed intermittent gasification technology, and provided strong support for the owner to achieve improved economic, social, and environmental outcomes.
