Recently, CAS Hefei Coal Gasification Technology Co., Ltd. (ZHGAS) signed an agreement with Xinjiang Dongfang Hope Carbon Co., Ltd. to cooperate on a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) coal gasification project, which involves the construction of a gas supply station within the company’s industrial park.
Xinjiang Dongfang Hope Carbon is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Dongfang Hope Group, located in the Wucaiwan Industrial Park of the Zhundong Economic and Technological Development Zone in Xinjiang. The company produces prebaked anodes using delayed petroleum coke and solid-modified asphalt as raw materials through a calcination process. To maximize the use of local coal resources and address the characteristics of Zhundong high-alkali coal—such as low ash melting point and high levels of calcium, sodium, and potassium—ZHGAS has designed a pulverized coal gasification station using CFB technology. The project includes two gasifiers, each with a capacity of 40,000 Nm³/h. Once operational, it will supply heat energy to the calcination unit, chlor-alkali cathode production, negative electrode materials, and aluminum processing lines.
This project marks ZHGAS’s third high-alkali coal gasification installation in Xinjiang, following the successful projects with Xinjiang Yihua and Xinjiang Qiya. The proven performance of ZHGAS's CGAS CFB gasification technology in handling high-alkali coals has earned wide recognition, making ZHGAS a preferred partner for many enterprises in the region.
The CGAS CFB gasification technology developed by ZHGAS offers core advantages such as strong coal adaptability, low energy consumption and cost, high overall efficiency, low emissions, and high operational reliability. In 2022, the technology passed a scientific and technological achievement appraisal organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, which concluded that it had reached an internationally advanced level overall, and achieved a leading position globally in high-alkali coal gasification. The technology holds great potential for supporting the utilization of Xinjiang’s coal resources and promoting regional economic development.
As the industrialization platform of the “CFB Gasification Technology Industrialization” project under the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Hongguang Special Program, ZHGAS has successfully commercialized the technology across various sectors, including coal-to-syngas and clean fuel gas. It has delivered a number of high-quality demonstration projects that generate economic, environmental, and social benefits. Looking ahead, ZHGAS will continue to expand the application of CFB gasification, drive industry innovation, and provide clean energy solutions to support the sustainable development of the coal and environmental sectors.
